It takes a real man to get his feet all tender after a mile of walking in red high heels.

And to prove the point, on Saturday, Darien’s firefighters, police and ambulance crews walked in red high heels from the corner of Nearwater Lane and the Post Road to the Darien YMCA and back as part of “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Darien” — a project of the Darien Domestic Abuse Council with the aim of showing men supporting and raising money for victims of domestic abuse.

At a Darien Police Commission meeting just over a month ago, Police Chief Duane Lovello mentioned that he experienced the walk first-hand last year:

“Well, I did it,” he said.

“In red high heels?” Commission Chairman J. Paul Johnson said incredulously.

Lovello: “I absolutely did. Pulled it off, too.”

Capt. Raymond Osborne: “We all did it.”

Capt. Donald Anderson: “All three of us” (referring to him, Lovello and Osborne). “My legs are still screaming. It was an adventure.”

Commission Member Kim Huffard: “The question is, have you signed up to do it again?

Lovello: “I will be doing it again. I don’t think I have a choice. … It’s painful. … I don’t know how you gals do that.”

The meeting was recorded for posterity here (the dialogue above starts at 04:43 and lasts about a minute).
