It’s lonely at the top.

For Darien Atria resident Sid Zacharais, age 101, that means being the fastest centenarian to row 1,000 meters on the indoor Concept2 rowing machine is a lonely competition — it turns out, the company doesn’t have an age category for that accomplishment. The closest it comes is for rowers age 90 to 99.

Instead, Zacharais’ feat may be to set the first record that others who are over 100 will aim to beat. Zacharais completed his thousand-meter row in 8 minutes, 24 seconds on Wednesday, according to an Atria spokeswoman:

“Since the age categories only go up to 100, Mr. Zacharias has set a new record time of 8 minutes and 24 seconds unofficially,” announced Beth Blake, a community sales associate at Darien Atria. “The times were submitted to Concept 2 today.”

Robert Spenger, a young whippersnapper at age 90, completed the same 1,000 meters on the Concept2 rower in 4 minutes, 16.4 seconds, according to the manufacturer’s website. That was in 2015.

If this Spenger kid can compete in about the year 2025, he’s welcome to try to beat Zacharais.

For now, it appears Zacharais is, unofficially, the world champ.
