The Town Monuments and Ceremonies Commission and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Darien Post 6933 will host.  A proclamation will be read.  Many Town and State officials have been invited.

Throughout the Town between November 6th and 11th, our schools will be observing the day and honoring our veterans.  It is one day where those whom our children know as father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, aunt and uncle can be recognized as people whose sacrifice and willingness to serve our country exemplify the qualities we would instill in our children.

Beginning in 1919, ceremonies were held in the United States, England, France, and Belgium on Nov. 11.  The date marked the cessation of fighting on the Western Front, and the signing of an armistice at Compeigne, France at 11 a.m., Nov. 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month).

The day became known as Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day.    President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day in the United States.

It is important to remember the exact time that the armistice at Compeigne was signed in 1918.  We may not have found peace in the world, but we still strive for it.  And we honor those who were and are willing to fight for it.
