Darien Library has won two honors in the Connecticut Library Association’s 2021 Publicity Awards. Here’s a look at each of the winning programs.

Krishna Grady, head of Youth Services, and Amanda L. Goodman, head of user experience, won in the Connected Community videos Electronic category. Goodman also won in the Designer’s Award category for the library’s Women’s History Month/Women’s Suffrage display. The library previously won other publicity awards at the state-level publicity contest and at the national level. These are the two winning Darien publicity efforts:

When Darien Library’s building closed in March 2020, library staff wanted to find a way to help people still feel like they were part of a community while sheltering in their homes.

Darien Library welcomes Tricia Kevalis from The Connecticut Audubon Society. She will lend her expertise and teach the basics of backyard birding from 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday, May 27. In this online class, learn how to identify backyard birds by sight and sound, who is at the feeder during each season and learn what their feeding habits are. — an announcement from Darien Library

Tricia will discuss bird characteristics, ways to attract birds to your feeder, what bird feeders and seed to use, and where to place feeders for bird safety and best viewing. This program includes the opportunity to view samples of bird feeders and different varieties of bird seed that will help create a bird-friendly sanctuary in your yard.

The life and work of Paul Cézanne, one of the most influential artists in the history of painting, will be the subject of art historian Page Knox in an hour-long talk Tuesday evening, May 18. — an announcement from Darien Library

Cézanne has inspired generations of artists. Born in 1839 and generally recognized as a Post-Impressionist, his unique method of building form with color and his analytical approach to the natural world influenced the art of Cubists, Fauves and avant-garde artists from his death in 1906 until the present day. Through an in-depth examination of his work, including the portraits of Provençal card players and his long-suffering wife, the famous apple still lifes, and the landscapes of his beloved Mt. Saint Victoire, this lecture will explore the life and art of Cézanne as he sought to attain the “essence of form.”

Do you love movies? Join us for a month long exploration of film! During this series you will learn the basics about film-making from page to screen and get hands on experience in video production. From writing a script to acting in the final product, work together to create a movie masterpiece! This online “For Teens, By Teens: Intro to Filmmaking” class is for 12- to 18-year-olds.

Darien Library has announced it will return to normal hours, including weekday evening hours, starting Monday, May 17. Various pandemic safety measures will be in place, however, including masks for everybody, limited seating and no indoor events — and late fines will be returning on June 1. Some outdoor events will take place in June. Currently, the library says on its website, the building “is open for quick 30-minute browsing and computer access in addition to our enhanced virtual offerings. The Children’s Library is open by appointment.”

Starting the divorce process brings up a number of questions: what are the steps that you will need to take? Should you choose litigation, mediation, or collaboration? What professionals will best serve you in this process? “Divorce, Now What?” will delve into the common mistakes and misconceptions that parties have about divorce.

The “Our Darien” book club says its second virtual book group title: For All She Knows, a novel involving a teen party, drinking, parents and a community that “explodes.” It’s by New Canaan author Jamie Beck. — an announcement from the Our Darien campaign of the Community Fund of Darien

With the book club, which has online discussions on Facebook, the “Our Darien” campaign continues its conversation about youth mental health, the dangers of substance use and how parents can best support their teens. A former Darien police youth officer and a knowledgeable social worker will participate in an online book club discussion. Participants are invited to read at their own pace, and thought-provoking questions will be posted each week on the Our Darien Facebook page (www.facebook.com/OurDarien, click “Groups”) to enhance the reader’s experience.

Connecticut Secretary of State Denise Merrill will provide a detailed explanation of how our state protects election integrity during an online talk from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., this Thursday, April 29. — an announcement from Darien Library and the Darien League of Women Voters

Merrill will also talk about how the state assists voters in casting their ballots — before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. The 2020 elections may be over, but our questions about voting aren’t. What are the reasons for our existing rules? How did we manage the increase in absentee ballots in our last election? Why should voters trust our system?

Darien Health Department issued advice Tuesday morning to anyone who took the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine, after reports of rare blood-clotting from others who have taken it. “People who have received the J&J vaccine who develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination should contact their health care provider.” In another COVID-19 related announcement, three Stamford Hospital physicians will answer questions from the public about the coronavirus in an online event Wednesday evening sponsored by Darien Library. Federal officials have suggested a pause in using the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Darien Health Department does not use it, the department said in the announcement (full text, below).

Darien Library invites professionals whose job search was affected by COVID-19 to take part in its “Job Seeker Summit,” a five-meeting online program with support from an expert and peer support. — an announcement from Darien Library
