What was it like to live in Darien 200 years ago? As the town celebrates its 200th birthday it’s an opportune time to ask the question. Both the book and the exhibition focus on life in town during the year 1820, when Darien gained its independence from Stamford and Norwalk. “People living in 1820s Darien were on the threshold of revolutionary developments that would usher in the modern age,” said Reiss.

New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and his fellow Pulitzer Prize winner, Sheryl WuDunn, will speak next week about their new book, “Tightrope: Americans Reaching for Hope,” at a downtown Stamford breakfast fundraiser. — an announcement from Family Centers and Barrett Bookstore

The breakfast event, a fundraiser for Greenwich-based Family Centers and co-sponsored by Barrett Bookstore, runs from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11 at the Stamford Sheraton, 700 East Main St. This husband-and-wife duo were the first married couple to win a Pulitzer in journalism and have written a series of best-selling books together. Kristof is often called a “reporter’s reporter” for his activism and was the subject of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival documentary “Reporter.”

Darien Library’s 5th Annual Novel Tea fundraiser on March 25 will feature novelist Lara Prescott, the New York Times bestselling author of The Secrets We Kept. — an announcement from Darien Library

“Prescott crafts a clock-and-dagger story of passion, espionage, and propaganda,” said The Wall Street Journal. 

The novel is inspired by a true CIA plot to infiltrate Soviet Russia through the greatest love story of the twentieth century: Doctor Zhivago. According to a recent “Note to Shelf” feature about book recommendations on the Darien Library website:

“The novel is set during the Cold War. It tracks the stories of many different characters from Washington DC to Russia. It is a love story, a historical account of a perilous turning point in our nation’s history, and a page-turning spy thriller all wrapped into one.”
