When a man driving a Ford Fusion was driving south on Mansfield Avenue at about 11 a.m. last Tuesday, Jan. 31, an SUV traveling north veered into his lane and struck it, but not before he started turning away — and struck a utility pole on the side of the road, police said.

It had just started snowing, and police said the road was slippery.

Darien police gave this account of the matter (including accusations against the other driver not proven in court):

The other driver, a Darien woman, 46, was driving a 2015 Acura MDX north on Mansfield Avenue, near its intersection with Fox Hill Lane when a vehicle in front of her stopped. She said she tried to stop, but when she braked her SUV, it started skidding, so she turned into the other lane to avoid an accident.

Instead, her SUV struck the front end of the Ford Fusion, which was driven by a 66-year-old Norwalk man.

Both drivers told police they were sore, and an ambulance crew from Darien EMS-Post 53 treated them, but neither went to a hospital.

The Darien woman was charged with driving too fast for road conditions, a traffic infraction.
