Anne Marie McCarthy a resident of Ridgefield and a former longtime resident of Darien, passed away on Monday, July 11, peacefully surrounded by her family after courageously battling ovarian cancer for nine years.

The funeral for Anne Marie McCarthy is scheduled for Friday, July 15.

Anne Marie was born in Aalen, nestled in the “Schwabische Albs”, Germany to Josef and Hildegard Marquart Gruner on Sept. 15, 1939. She was 76.

Anne Marie travelled from Germany on the SS Hanseatic to New York City. She later met her husband, Eugene G. McCarthy, at the World’s Fair. After living in the New York City area for several years, they chose Darien as their family home town, where they raised their two children, Deborah McCarthy Sutton and James M. McCarthy, who she was most dedicated to.

Anne Marie enthusiastically worked in the skin care and cosmetics industry where she proudly served as the “diamond star” manager for Elizabeth Arden at Filene’s in Stamford. Anne Marie was an inspiration to anyone who crossed paths with her. She was very big on traditions, family values and unity, a reflection of her faith. She was a member of the German Club and The Harugare Singing Society.

She is survived by her daughter, Deborah McCarthy Sutton and her husband, James, and a son, James M. McCarthy and his wife Laura. She is also survived by her grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart, Anna Kathleen and Seamus Eugene Sutton and Caitlin and Brendan McCarthy. Also surviving are her mother, Hildegard Marquart Gruner, five brothers, Peter, Herbert, Josef, Rolf and Fred and one sister, Crystal. She was predeceased by her father Josef Gruner.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 15, 2016 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Rd., Darien. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 16, at 10:30 a.m. at St, Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, 376 Middlesex Road, Darien. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Attn: Amanda Gilstein, 885 Second Avenue, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10017. Please indicate on the check that the gift is in memory of Anne Marie McCarthy.
